Magpul Pmag 17 GL9 Review

If you're like most, hitting the range on the weekend with your Glock 19x is more than just practice; it's about the peace and challenge of perfecting your shot. This also rings true with extensive garage laser dry fire training for shot placement, draw perfection, and mag swaps. When it comes to gear, I'm all for finding that sweet spot between quality and budget. That's where the Magpul PMAG 17 GL9 magazine fits right in, especially when about $100 lands you 10 mags on your door step.

Straight-Up Performance

First off, let's talk about how these mags run, specifically in relation to the Palmetto State Armory Dagger 9mm. I've put these through the paces — rain, shine, and the occasional, accidental drop in the mud. Being fully transparent, more often than not they end up bouncing off my concrete garage floor as they miss the padding I have laid down for practicing mag swaps. With that said, I have never had a Pmag fail me. Ever. Of any kind. Every time, rounds feed smoothly. It's like the reliable buddy who always shows up on moving day. No drama, just performance. And not once have I had an issue with the slide failing to lock back after the last round. It's the little things, you know?

The Wiggle

It's not all sunshine and rainbows with the Pmag however. In my PSA Dagger there is the PMag wiggle. The mags are fully seated, and perform flawlessly, however if you give the grip a shake or grab the mag and shake it there is some wiggle room involved. I personally do not own a glock (😱 I know, right?), so I cannot confirm whether this happens in the OEM pews, but for my Dagger the slight wiggle is plenty tolerable for such a reliable and affordable platform.

The Paint Pen Dot Matrix

The Paint Pen Dot Matrix is designed to allow you to mark your magazines with information you might need in a pinch. Perhaps one mag is FMJ and another is hollow point. Perhaps one is supersonic and another is subsonic. The need to be able to identify different magazines at a glance is relevant. Personally though, I feel the execution here leaves a bit of room for improvement. I prefer just putting some painters tape on it and marking as needed. However, as the tone of this article suggests, I am a hobby shooter. I'm not an operator. For those with more extreme needs perhaps the dot matrix with various paints is a real game changer. For the average joe, it's not really that beneficial.

Indicators at a glance

The orange follower is appreciated, of course, alongside consistently locking the slide open on the last round. The count indicator at 17 rounds is also easy to see and understand you're full up. Kudos to Magpul on this one. I flex my thumbs and load by hand so knowing I've got to snap into a Slim Jim and shove one more round in there to be full up is good to know.

Built Like a Tank, Priced Like a Steal

They're robust These mags feel solid, despite being polymer, like you could accidentally run them over with your truck, dust them off, and they'd still be good for your next range day. Probably shouldn't do that with any piece of kit you value though. But the kicker? The price. We're talking about 1/3 of what you'd shell out for an OEM Glock 17 mag. More money in your pocket means more money for ammo or pick up a 10 pack of mags and stash them in various places.

Zero Fuss, Zero Failures

I don't baby my gear. My mags get used and sometimes abused. Despite that, I've never had a failure to feed or a misfeed with the PMAG 17 GL9. It's reassuring to know that whether I'm trying to improve my accuracy or just blowing off some steam, these mags will keep up without any hiccups. I however am a weekend warrior. I'm not in the line of fire, and I don't visit the two way range. I'd probably shell out for the OEM mags if my life absolutely depended on it.

Why It Matters

For us weekend warriors, range time is precious. It's about focusing on what you love without getting bogged down by unreliable gear. The Magpul PMAG 17 GL9 gets that. It's straightforward, reliable, and doesn't pretend to be something it's not. And in a world where everyone seems to be upselling, finding gear that just works, without the premium price tag, feels like a win.

Wrapping It Up

So, if you're on the hunt for a magazine that's going to give you peace of mind, not empty your wallet, and possibly outlast the zombie apocalypse, the Magpul PMAG 17 GL9 magazine might just be your new best friend at the range. It's about getting the most bang for your buck (pun intended) and spending more time shooting and less time worrying about your gear. Here's to the weekend warriors — may our gear be sturdy, our aim true, and our wallets not too light.
