Whatman Grade No. 1 Filter Paper Whatman. 1 Filter Paper 1001-917 is a highly absorbent paper used in the pre-filtration stage of most distillation processes. The paper is provided with an extra layer of interlayer ensuring that a consistent level of absorbency is provided. The addition of a binder provides strength and uniformity of a consistent grade of filtration. Whatman's proprietary manufacturing process creates an interlayer with twice the porosity of normal filter papers. Whatman Grade N
